Guide to Europe | Leading Content Production on a Continental Scale

There's a big difference between writing a great travel guide and overseeing the production of hundreds of them.

As Content Lead at Guide to Europe, I was responsible for building and managing a large-scale editorial operation producing destination guides, tour descriptions and travel content covering locations across Europe.

This was before generative AI transformed the content industry. Scaling production meant managing real writers, developing comprehensive editorial guidelines, reviewing and improving their work, and finding ways to maintain quality and consistency as output increased.

It was less about writing every word myself and more about making sure thousands of words, across countless destinations and experiences, met the same editorial standards.

Scaling Content Without Compromising Quality

For a travel marketplace, content is much more than decoration. It's how travellers discover new destinations, compare experiences, understand what they're booking and ultimately decide where to spend their money.

Guide to Europe's ambition to become a comprehensive resource for European travel presented an enormous editorial challenge. Covering destinations, attractions and bookable experiences across an entire continent required a substantial volume of content, produced efficiently and to consistently high standards.

As Content Lead, my role was to turn that ambition into a manageable editorial operation.

I worked with a team of writers, developing detailed briefs, style guidelines and editorial processes to ensure every piece of content met our requirements. That meant establishing expectations around structure, tone of voice, accuracy, research and SEO, while giving writers the feedback and direction they needed to improve.

Quality assurance was a major part of the job. I reviewed and edited large volumes of content, checked for factual inconsistencies, challenged weak or generic writing and made sure the finished work was genuinely useful to travellers. Just as importantly, I looked for ways to make the process more efficient, identifying recurring issues and refining our guidelines so the same problems didn't keep appearing.

The experience shaped how I think about content today. AI has fundamentally changed the economics of production, but it hasn't eliminated the need for editorial judgement, clear guidelines or robust quality assurance. If anything, the ability to manage content at scale while maintaining accuracy, consistency and usefulness has become more important than ever.
